Donald Byrd was off to the races after joining Blue Note in 1958 and had fully hit his hard bop stride by 1961 with his excellent album, Royal Flush. Joining the trumpeter was a state-of-the-art rhythm section, featuring Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums, plus Byrd's frequent collaborator Pepper Adams on bari sax. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Moremary Hill EP begins, Sixpence None the Richer's first release since 2012, Leigh Nash sings, "In the eye of the storm, I'm gonna thread the needle." Now three decades after Nash met her musical partner Matt Slocum in New Braunfels, Texas, Sixpence is threading the needle in the sweet spot they have often longed for throughout a stormy yet momentous career. Slocum confesses that two of the six new songs are an attempt to immortalize their hometown: "New Braunfels was an amazing place to grow up... We could roam freely in the streets, from sunup to sundown." Nash adds, "Meeting Matt is the most important thing that happened for me in New Braunfels." That rings true for all of us; New Braunfels, Texas is the birthplace of Sixpence None the Richer, a great American rock 'n' roll band. While Sixpence has been Nashville-based for most of their career, Rosemary Hill reveals they are at heart a Texas band. On their 2016 album, Bad Vibrations, A Day to Remember claim to have approached the writing process with no expectations and organically came up with their finest work to date. According to Jeremy McKinnon, ADTR's frontman, this album "... came together organically. We took some time to get together and write with no real expectations," says the singer. The band took a trek up to Fort Collins, CO where they'd collaborate with Descendants' Bill Stevenson who produced the album. The lead single "Paranoia" raced up the Active Rock Charts upon release, and McKinnon recalls, "That song just kind of came out of nowhere one day-and we were all really pumped on it." Radio is just one key to this band's success, as touring is front and center to the ADTR master plan. The band has curated their own music Festival, dubbed Self Help Fest - since 2014 - with the attendance growing each year. With Laurel Hell, Mitski cements her reputation as... More an artist in possession of such power - capable of using her talent to perform the alchemy that turns our most savage and alienated experiences into the very elixir that cures them. Her critically beloved last album, Be the Cowboy, built on the breakout acclaim of 2016's Puberty 2 and launched her from cult favorite to indie star. She ascended amid a fever of national division, and the grind of touring and pitfalls of increased visibility influenced her music as much as her spirit. Like the mountain laurels for this new album is named, public perception, like the intoxicating prism of the internet, can offer an alluring façade that obscures a deadly trap-one that tightens the more you struggle. Exhausted by this warped mirror, and our addiction to false binaries, she began writing songs that stripped away the masks and revealed the complex and often contradictory realities behind them. She wrote many of these songs during or before 2018, while the album finished mixing in May 2021. It is the longest span of time Mitski has ever spent on a record, and a process that concluded amid a radically changed world. She recorded Laurel Hell with her longtime producer Patrick Hyland throughout the isolation of a global pandemic, during which some of the songs "slowly took on new forms and meanings, like seed to flower." Sometimes it's hard to see the change when you're the agent of it, but for the lucky rest of us, Mitski has written a soundtrack for transformation, a map to the place where vulnerability and resilience, sorrow and delight, error and transcendence can all sit within our humanity, can all be seen as worthy of acknowledgment, and ultimately, love.
