In the Summer of 1989, word was out that the Grate... Moreful Dead were recording their summer tour for an upcoming live album. Thankfully, word later spread that they were also recording the magnificent Fall Tour of 1989. And then the equally great Spring Tour of 1990. Just before the Dead split for Europe in the Fall of 1990, they surprised their fans with the release of the long-awaited live album, showing off their late-Brent era excellence. Mixed from the 24-track analog master tapes, the album was a sonic wonder, filled with some of the best material played by the Dead on the last tours featuring Brent Mydland, who would pass away before the album was completed. Included on the album is a beautiful rendition of Dear Mr. Fantasy, a late addition to the track list, as a tribute to Brent, to whom the album is dedicated. Real Estate’s sixth full-length album Daniel was... More recorded in an ebullient nine-day spree in RCA Studio A, in Nashville with celebrated producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian. In 11 compulsively tuneful songs, they connect the uninhibited wonder of their earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood. Martin Courtney actually learned of Tashian through his daughter, who adored an album he’d produced, Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. The band reached out and spotted an instant connection despite their distinct wheelhouses—the Grammy-winning Nashville country-pop guy who’d helmed several smashes and the Northeast indie rock quintet with narcotic guitars. Real Estate had been thinking about R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People and ’90s “soft-rock radio,” the background music of their youth. Tashian helped lead them back toward it, toward an improved edition of the less self-conscious band they’d been at the start. Several days into recording, all five members of Real Estate were discussing album titles when someone suggested “Daniel,” simply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record. Their first release after the members' solo albums, it was their last outing with drummer Peter Criss (he was on the cover of UNMASKED, but not the tracks within), and Ace Frehley's departure wasn't far off. DYNASTY is an album of some bombast, with slick production, the inevitable nod to disco ("I Was Made For Loving You"), a Stones cover ("2000 Man") and plenty of their trademark hard rock/pop hybrid. Definitely a softer take on the Kiss sound, this was a harbinger of what the '80s would hold for the band--a more radio-friendly style. Sessions were held at Young’s Broken Arrow Ranch in Northern California and Sunset Sound in Hollywood, and there was a definite feeling of expanding elements of musical styles being added to the playbook. The songs range from"See The Sky About To Rain" to "Ambulance Blues,"and explore the evolving counterculture in the 1970s in ways which had not been done.
