About Epitaph

Epitaph Records is an artist-first indie label founded in Los Angeles by Bad Religion guitarist, Brett Gurewitz. Early releases from a variety of punk heavyweights helped launch the 90s punk explosion. Along the way, Epitaph has grown and evolved creatively while sticking to its mission of helping real artists make great recordings on their own terms.

Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. Bad Religion has become synonymous with intelligent and provocative West Coast punk rock and are considered one of the most influential and important bands in the genre. Over the past four decades the band has continually pushed social boundaries and questioned authority and beliefs armed only with propulsive guitars, charging drumbeats, thoughtful lyrics and an undying will to inspire and provoke anyone who will listen. Originally issued on Epitaph Records in 1998, No Substance was the band's tenth studio effort overall and second release following guitarist Brett Gurewitz's departure from the band (he would rejoin in 2001). Seen as a return to form for the band after the transitional The Gray Race, No Substance offers up tight and heady punk which touches on societal ills and world politics and still remains catchy as hell. Remastered from the original studio masters, bringing out a louder, more clear sound!

Wonderful
I agree with the statement that BR fans are getting worse. BR are, to me, one of the greatest BANDS ever (punk or not) with some of the most provoctive lyrics and some awesome music. They have probably the tightest and best rhythm section ever and if only for the VORACIOUS MARCH OF GODLINESS, this album is killer. VMOG has one of thee most infectious and meloidous chorus (is it choruses?) i ever heard. i can not sit still for that.HEAR IT is straight ahead punk and brilliant at that, while SHADES OF TRUTH is another infectious incendary song that is classic BR. I think all this talk of melody and harmonies (like on RAISE YOUR VOICE) scare purists punks. do not be so closed minded.Evolve with the band. this is a great band and great album. The band is coming into its own and sounding great. Bad Religion deliver tight, sophisticated, extremely intelligent (grab your dictionary and tell me what VORACIOUS means) consciencess, intense, fast and furious songs that comment on lots of issues about society. There are harmonies and great melodies and it all remains punk. some may disagree but rememeber when punk exploded out of CBGB'S in NY way back when it was the RAMONES along with BLONDIE & the TALKING HEADS. i would never call the HEADS or BLONDIE punk untili learned that whips and chains and a mohawk do not make you punk. It is your state of mind and to all the purists out there i say, its time to open your mind and embrace BR for they are one of thee greatest bands ever.

Bad Religion writes some of the most memorable and entertaining music and lyrics in music period and No Substance is the pinnacle of this achievement. Every song is the epitome of musicality meeting message. Songs like the title song, No Substance, Hear It, Raise Your Voice, The Biggest Killer In American History, The State Of The End Of The Millennium Address and All Fantastic Images are just the tip of the iceberg on an album so good the reviews criticize it for not living up to pedestrian efforts like Against The Grain, hilarious, the masses always stand in the way of everything "good" and Bad Religion actually says so SO of course they are criticized unfairly, the propaganda and system must always stay in place. When you leave conditioning to chance you get people that make sterile, boring, regurgitated propaganda that is exceedingly popular AND this album stands in the way of that albatross with the ultimate, entertaining, meaning and message SO treat yourself to a treasure. Don't let the masses continue to dictate entertainment and education.

While this album may not be as excellent as Against the Grain, Stranger than Fiction or the Empire Strikes first, this is still a must have for BR fans.

The ONLY explanation I’ve been able to come up with (all the cries of “uninspired”, “forgettable”, “subpar”, and the like are vague at best), is that after delivering album after album of stellar creative progression, starting with Suffer and peaking with Recipe For Hate, they delivered the “back to basics”, stripped down Stranger Than Fiction. A strong album made that a smart move, but when they delivered No Substance, which was a mixture of Recipe’s varied tempos and progressiveness, with Fiction’s roots-based, naked, 3 chord fury, the fan base started complaining because they hadn’t topped themselves again.

Every artist comes to a point in their career where they stop being innovators and settle into a groove with their formula that works. Sure, some artists like Tom Waits continue to push, but in retrospect, you can still call his entire body of work pure “Tom Waits”. Other bands like AC/DC found that formula on album 1 and rode the wave for the next 40+ years.

I think people should be BEYOND GRATEFUL that a PUNK band has managed to squeeze so much diversity into their catalogue... I LOVE punk and always will, so I accept that pushing the envelope into new boundaries isn’t always what you’re going to hear with each new album... so to have a band in the genre so versatile to keep things interesting still after 35+ years, I’d say we should all give No Substance another chance for what it is.. another great album by Bad Religion, a band we’re so lucky made it out of the 80s intact, but won’t be around forever...
