While Nilsson began coming into his own at the beg... Moreinning of the 1970s, Randy Newman was virtually unknown to anyone outside the world of music publishing and almost nonexistent as a performer. The critical appeal that both would eventually (and rightfully) attain makes this artistic summit all the more poignant. Famously named “Record of the Year” by Stereo Review magazine, Harry Nilsson’s Nilsson Sings Newman stands well outside the mainstream of other LPs of this period – with Newman’s piano providing the sole accompaniment to the multi-tracked army of Nilsson harmonies and overdubs. It is also the first album where Nilsson acted as his own producer. Part of the album's charm can be heard in the studio talkback that Nilsson chose to include in-between his vocal harmonies to help achieve the final product. Stunning from start to finish, fan favorites include “Vine St.,” “Love Story” and “Living Without You.” Less
FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE is the 22nd solo studio album... More from Brian Eno and the first since 2017's Reflection. The album was recorded and produced by him at his studio in West London and sees Eno singing on the majority of tracks. It's a sonically beguiling, ultimately optimistic exploration of the narrowing, precarious future of humanity and our planet. As Eno himself concludes, "Briefly, we need to fall in love again, but this time with Nature, with Civilization and with our hopes for the future." Less

Morefied album Doolittle catapulted the band into the UK Top Ten, and 20 years since their celebrated reformation at Coachella, Pixies are deep into their second act, and in the midst of a creative purple patch. The Night The Zombies Came is Pixies' tenth album, if you count their classic 1987 4AD mini-LP, Come On Pilgrim, and first new music since 2022's acclaimed Doggerel LP. 13 new songs that find Pixies looking ahead to the most cinematic record of their career. Druidism, apocalyptic shopping malls, mediaeval themed restaurants, 12th century poetic form, surf rock, gargoyles, bog people, and the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s-era Fleetwood Mac are just some of the disparate wonders that inform the new songs. Since the ’80s, Soul Asylum have been a group kn... Moreown for their raucous but emphatic combination of punk energy, guitar-fueled firepower, and songs that range from aggressive to heartfelt. All of these things are present in spades on the Minneapolis band’s gloriously, joyously loose 13th studio album, 'Slowly But Shirley'. For 'Slowly But Shirley', it also helped that Soul Asylum turned to a familiar name for production: Steve Jordan, who had also produced the band’s 1990 effort 'And the Horse They Rode In On'. Back when they first worked together, the members of Soul Asylum were still figuring out how best to capture their sound in the studio—and Jordan’s approach of having the band play live together in one room was ideal. “He taught us a language of players playing music in the studio,” Pirner says. “Which we were not at the time. We still didn't really understand what you were supposed to do in what order.” Decades later, both parties are in different places. Jordan is currently the drummer for the Rolling Stones, and Soul Asylum remains one of the most inspiring and hardworking bands in the rock scene, having broken through commercially with the double-platinum 1992 album Grave Dancers Union. Originally released in 1990, Same Place The Fly Go... Moret Smashed was Guided by Voices' fourth album in as many years. Roughly a concept album about an alcoholic named Joker Bob who goes on a bender, someone dies, and Bob gets the chair ("the electrifying conclusion"). From the moment the needle drops, the listener is served notice that this isn't going to be an easy listen, as an argument taped off of a TV cuts to a basement recording of a lone, blaring electric guitar with someone yelling over the top. But for those brave enough to pass the opening hazards, there are wonders within. This particular album has come to be held in higher and higher regard by fans, and they are correct to consider it a top-tier release. The story and sequence have a flow, and consideration for approachability is optional. Many of the crudest tracks reveal themselves as necessary stitches in the album's tapestry. Yet it also contains all time greats like "Drinker's Peace," "Mammoth Cave," the epic "Local Mix-Up/Murder Charge," and of course "Pendulum" with it's immortal opening line: "Come on over tonight, we'll put on some Cat Butt and do it up right!"-a rare break in the clouds on one of the band's darkest albums. This reissue, like the previous ones in this series, is a mostly faithful reproduction of the original pressing of 500 on the band's own Rocket #9 label.
