The album contains some of Neil’s most iconic songs: “Pocahontas”, “Like A Hurricane”, “Powderfinger”, Homegrown”, “Too Far Gone” and “Star of Bethlehem”. Real Estate’s sixth full-length album Daniel was... More recorded in an ebullient nine-day spree in RCA Studio A, in Nashville with celebrated producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian. In 11 compulsively tuneful songs, they connect the uninhibited wonder of their earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood. Martin Courtney actually learned of Tashian through his daughter, who adored an album he’d produced, Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. The band reached out and spotted an instant connection despite their distinct wheelhouses—the Grammy-winning Nashville country-pop guy who’d helmed several smashes and the Northeast indie rock quintet with narcotic guitars. Real Estate had been thinking about R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People and ’90s “soft-rock radio,” the background music of their youth. Tashian helped lead them back toward it, toward an improved edition of the less self-conscious band they’d been at the start. Several days into recording, all five members of Real Estate were discussing album titles when someone suggested “Daniel,” simply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record. Was it for Daniel Tashian? Maybe. Was it a nod to The Replacements’ Tim? Possibly. Thankfully, word later spread that they were also recording the magnificent Fall Tour of 1989. And then the equally great Spring Tour of 1990. Just before the Dead split for Europe in the Fall of 1990, they surprised their fans with the release of the long-awaited live album, showing off their late-Brent era excellence. Mixed from the 24-track analog master tapes, the album was a sonic wonder, filled with some of the best material played by the Dead on the last tours featuring Brent Mydland, who would pass away before the album was completed. Included on the album is a beautiful rendition of Dear Mr. Fantasy, a late addition to the track list, as a tribute to Brent, to whom the album is dedicated. The LP version is pressed on 180g opaque grey vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve, includes extensive liner notes and session details by Andrew Sandoval and lyrics to all of the songs. Also included is a bonus track, the 1973 alternate version of "Marie's Theme". Nesmith's time with the Monkees was well and truly in the rear-view mirror and he needed a new place to live and work. He caught the ear of Jac Holzman, head of Elektra Records, and a path forward miraculously appeared. Realising that most of the record companies at the time didn't understand Country Rock, Nesmith convinced Holzman to start a new label, Countryside. Nesmith would run the label, put together a 'house band' and produce albums by various up and coming country artists. Unfortunately, most of the new label's releases didn't make much of an impression and Nesmith soon started to contemplate his own music again. Aided by the power of his Countryside house band, he quickly crafted Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash, a full and final RCA album. Despite it's commercial sheen, Ranch Stash wasn't a success sales-wise and it became the closing remark to a heavy chapter in Nesmith's life, a final "adios" to Monkee Mike, to the cosmic cowboy, and to his family, as he moved further on up the trail. In 2002, Regina Spektor was in the midst of a crea... Moretive explosion. She found herself writing so many songs that she was unable to keep track of them. Her friend Joe Mendelson noticed she was forgetting some entirely, and offered to archive everything she had written that year. After Regina recorded dozens of songs, one take each, they decided to pick twelve and make them into an album. And so,Songs was born.
