Originally released in 1990, Same Place The Fly Go... Moret Smashed was Guided by Voices' fourth album in as many years. Roughly a concept album about an alcoholic named Joker Bob who goes on a bender, someone dies, and Bob gets the chair ("the electrifying conclusion"). From the moment the needle drops, the listener is served notice that this isn't going to be an easy listen, as an argument taped off of a TV cuts to a basement recording of a lone, blaring electric guitar with someone yelling over the top. But for those brave enough to pass the opening hazards, there are wonders within.This particular album has come to be held in higher and higher regard by fans, and they are correct to consider it a top-tier release. The story and sequence have a flow, and consideration for approachability is optional. Many of the crudest tracks reveal themselves as necessary stitches in the album's tapestry. Yet it also contains all time greats like "Drinker's Peace," "Mammoth Cave," the epic "Local Mix-Up/Murder Charge," and of course "Pendulum" with it's immortal opening line: "Come on over tonight, we'll put on some Cat Butt and do it up right!"-a rare break in the clouds on one of the band's darkest albums.This reissue, like the previous ones in this series, is a mostly faithful reproduction of the original pressing of 500 on the band's own Rocket #9 label. In the years following Splendor & Misery - the band's acclaimed dystopian science fiction-rap epic - they simply made too many songs for one album. Before the release of There Existed..., Clipping and Sub Pop divided the material up into two albums, designed to be released only months apart. Their previous album and first with Hogarth, Season’s End, was written fairly quickly, leaning on a large amount of material already being written prior to Hogarth’s arrival. Holidays In Eden brought about a different challenge to the band’s new line-up, having to start from scratch with this new dynamic. The band faced their greatest commercial pressure yet from EMI, who wanted a couple radio-friendly singles. It set the path for pop-friendly Chris Neil to produce the album, who still desired, along with the band, for the rest of the album to be quintessentially Marillion. Holidays In Eden is a scintillating, compelling rock album, with tracks such as The Party and This Town effortlessly accompanying singles like No-One Can and Dry Land. Less
Chrome Dreams is another of Neil Young’s legenda... Morery “lost” albums; finished albums that for various reasons Neil decided not to release at the time. The recent releases of Homegrown and Toast also fall into this category. Chrome Dreams features 12 songs recorded between 1974 and 1977. If the album was released in 1977 as originally planned, it would certainly be considered as one of the masterpieces in Neil’s long career.
The album contains some of Neil’s most iconic songs: “Pocahontas”, “Like A Hurricane”, “Powderfinger”, Homegrown”, “Too Far Gone” and “Star of Bethlehem”. Most of the tracks were subsequently released on later Neil Young albums (e.g.: American Stars ‘N’ Bars, Hawks & Doves, Hitchiker, Archives Vol II), although Chrome Dreams includes unreleased versions of two much loved songs: “Sedan Delivery” and “Hold Back The Tears”.
