- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024Outstanding, I definitely recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2003Every Tori Amos CD is a journey, usually to a dark place, and Scarlet's Walk is no exception. However, the fear and pity of Little Earthquakes have been replaced by a more mature, somewhat detached view. As everyone probably knows by now, the CD is the journey of Scarlet across America.
1. Amber Waves -- Great metaphor of America as a porn star, offering lots of empty excitement.
2. A Sorta Fairytale -- Probably Tori's most commercial song to date but also one of the most haunting. The way Tori sings "you lost me in the rearview" is just heartwrenching.
3. Wednesday -- It's nice to hear Tori kick back and have some fun once in awhile. Wednesday sounds like an old time party song.
4. Strange -- an interesting look at the disintegration of a relationship.
5. Carbon -- this is my favorite song on the CD. The poetry describing a woman's breakdown is stunning, and the baroque-ish piano is perfect for the song.
6. Crazy -- a slow, jazzy kind of tune.
7. Wampum Prayer -- a short accapella piece. Not sure why this didn't open the CD.
8. Don't Make Me Come to Vegas -- a sultry song about rescuing someone (a friend, an ex, a family member?) in Las Vegas. Fantastic musically.
9. Sweet Sangria -- Has kind of a 70's Steely Dan sort of sound to it. Takes a while to get into, but definitely grows on you.
10. Your cloud -- this is probably the first Tori Amos song that could be played at a wedding. A very pretty, tuneful song. Perfect for the bride and groom's first dance.
11. Pancake -- a song about religious intolerance. The "I ordered you a pancake" line in the context of the song shows Tori's subtle humor.
12. I Can't See New York -- a very powerful and emotional song that seems to indirectly be about the 9/11 attacks. Hard to listen to. The view from the air part is especially poignant: "from here, no lines are drawn. From here, no lands are owned."
13. Mrs Jesus -- I did not like this song at first but now it's one of my favorites. I love the sly reference to the Beatles: "the gospel change meaning if you follow John or Paul, but could you ever Let It Be, the Mary of it all."
14. Taxi Ride -- another "hit". The lyrics seem to reflect an ambivalence about celebrity culture. It was bizarre to see Tori perform this on Regis Philbin's show.
15. Another Girl's Paradise -- nice song, but probably my least favorite on the CD.
16. Scarlet's Walk -- perfect song that puts the CD into context.
17. Virginia -- really captures the flavor of the south. The banjo's are a nice, different touch.
18. Gold Dust -- this song brought tears to my eyes. The bittersweet yet defiant way that Tori sings "I was here!" always gets me choked up. Tori actually cried when she played this in San Francisco (until some imbecile ruined it near the end by screaming out a song request and was promptly told off by a visibly angry Tori).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2024I'm a huge Tori Amos fan. This is one of my favorites. Record was perfect with no problems. Listened to it several times while having game night with my adult kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2024Such a good album. Great to be listening to it again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2002Tori returns to the form that brought her the masses of Tori-philes from the days of "Little Earthquakes" and "Under the Pink." And if one had to rank it among Amos' other fare, I would have to say it holds its own falling a close third to her first two albums. We have enjoyed the ride of discovery as Tori has branched out into electronica, goth, self-confessional alternating slow and break-out explosion manic-depressive rants, but this is why we fell in love with the girl in the first place. Tori's sound here is more muted than it has been in the recent past, and her piano plays beauty with the occasional growl thrown in. The songs grow on you with each repeated listen like a road trip grows as each mile rolls by.
We get Tori's impressions of women across America during a road trip that even has a map showing the individual trail that inspired each individual song...fetching idea. Tori's songwriting is on her game. Her voice soars with a little more raspiness than we've heard in the past. It suits the music well, especially in songs like the slow funk jazz of "Pancake." The album is well-produced in true do-it yourself style, Tori taking the matters in her own hands.
Something that we hear on nearly every track is beautifully layered backing vocals. Haunting sirens that blend well with Tori's lead and seem to wisp in and out coming from hollows coming from the wind layered so many one on top of the other. On close inspection of the liner notes, we find that all vocals are attributed to none other than Ms. Amos herself. I'm not one to jump to the altar of Tori without any criticism, but her musical genius is pretty self-evident here as it was on all of "Little Earthquakes," and has been here and there throughout her career.
I suppose I enjoy the longevity of this album allowing us to hear more of Tori's American vision, but even on a road trip there are states you wish you could time warp through...Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and other flat lands of sameness. So, there is some sameness through the threads of these songs and some tracks are Colorado while others are North Dakota. Strong and unforgettable tracks, Silent All These Years of "Amber Waves", catchiness of "A Sorta Fairytale," the swagger of chanteuse in "Don't Make me come to Vegas." What else? What else? "Sweet Sangria," has a slow funk, "Pancake," has a growl, and "Taxi Ride" tops it off with a hit to be cherished live, cherished on the radio on road trips across America.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2023I collect vinyl and am a huge Tori fan. Thrilled she put this out on the medium (nudge nudge, need choirgirl Mrs. H!) The quality of the vinyl was perfect. I always inspect a new one to see if I need to clean it first before I drop the needle. After a visual scan and a swipe of the needle, I declared, "Damn! I'm letting it play as is!!"
It doesn't disappoint! Clean and sounds like perfection, like our Lady Amos. Thank you for this gift to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enfin la version vinyle !

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost in a place called America
After years of experimentations on Boys for Pele, From The Choirgirl Hotel and Strange Little Girls, Tori Amos came back with a more classical album, more in the vein of her two firsts, but deeper and more vibrant than anything she did before. Influenced by the attacks of September 11, 2001, Tori Amos takes us on an odyssey across America, almost cinematic in scope, which is reminiscent of Tom Joad's journey in the once desolate landscape of America, which is now marked, more than sixty years later, with the seal of death and oblivion. This is an epic production that will forever remains in your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.
Scarlet's Walk is far, far better than I ever hoped it would be. By turns haunting, provocative, poignant and mesmerising, the arrangements and the vocals are smooth and the lyrics, whilst at first glance nominally less opaque than those on recent of albums (especially To Venus and Back), still typically retain layers of meaning with their use of metaphor. It's an album of standout tracks, but those that linger in the ears and the mind the longest are the Pink Floyd-esque, emotionally-wrenching story of a girl on a plane who will never reach New York, "I Can't See New York", the vocally-layered, haunting Carbon, the upbeat, gliding, yet sorrowful Taxi Ride, the beautifully melodic "story-of-Pochohontas-as-America-metaphor", Virginia, and the string-orchestra enhanced Gold Dust. This is the work of an true artist at the height of her powers. It hasn't been off my stereo since I bought it. Buy it, and buy her entire back catalogue too, whilst you're there. You will not regret it.
