“This one’s a lot nastier.” —Prince, 1979 Prince began work on his sophomore album just seven months after releasing his debut. The album pulses with an electric energy, especially on the dance singles “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?” Prince would perform both of those songs on his national television debut on American Bandstand following the release of Prince, showcasing his increasing interest in transferring the energy of the studio to the stage. Prince was performed, recorded and produced by Prince, with two members of his live band, the drummer Bobby “Z.” Rivkin and bassist André Cymone, credited as “heaven-sent helpers.”
Round Room was recorded at the barn in Vermont by ... MoreBryce Goggin during four days over two weekends in October 2002. The songs were written mainly by Trey Anastasio and Tom Marshall, with the title track and “Mock Song” by Mike Gordon. The Round Room sessions were initially intended as rehearsals for the band’s upcoming end-of-hiatus new year’s eve show at Madison Square Garden, giving the recording a loose, live feel with several extended tracks like “Pebbles And Marbles”, “Seven Below”, “Walls Of The Cave”, and “Waves”. The album was originally mastered by Fred Kevorkian and released by Elektra December 10, 2002. Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman mastering cut the lacquers for the 2024 vinyl, which is presented in deluxe gatefold, foil-numbered edition packaging, 2-lps pressed on 180g audiophile color vinyl. Real Estate’s sixth full-length album Daniel was... More recorded in an ebullient nine-day spree in RCA Studio A, in Nashville with celebrated producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian. In 11 compulsively tuneful songs, they connect the uninhibited wonder of their earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood. Martin Courtney actually learned of Tashian through his daughter, who adored an album he’d produced, Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour. The band reached out and spotted an instant connection despite their distinct wheelhouses—the Grammy-winning Nashville country-pop guy who’d helmed several smashes and the Northeast indie rock quintet with narcotic guitars. Real Estate had been thinking about R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People and ’90s “soft-rock radio,” the background music of their youth. Tashian helped lead them back toward it, toward an improved edition of the less self-conscious band they’d been at the start. Several days into recording, all five members of Real Estate were discussing album titles when someone suggested “Daniel,” simply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record. Was it for Daniel Tashian? Maybe. Was it a nod to The Replacements’ Tim? Possibly. Was it the sign of a band that has now been around long enough to take its music seriously without taking itself or its perception too seriously? Absolutely. Less

If KiCk i is a multidimensional self-portrait that... More held all of Arca's many mutations, KICK ii sees her deconstruct reggaeton rhythms she grew up listening to in Caracas, balancing structure and chaos to create her most accessible work yet, without sacrificing any of her uncompromising experimentation; the rising cycle. KicK iii sees her returning to the club nights that shaped her early adult-hood where Arca was born: the surrealist DJ, warping dance music structures to fit her singular vision-relentless rhythms to drive listeners into uncharted states of euphoria, anthems for the basement-dark queer clubs of our cyberpunk near-future; the climax of the cycle. With kick iiii, the cycle resolves, and a new species of xenopop emerges, sensual and serene. Arca's talents as a composer and sound designer take the lead on closing track "Paw," setting melodies to drift on deep, gentle waves of orchestral ambience, an oceanic bliss. On kiCK iiiii the ambient ecstasy transitions swiftly into lullaby-like compositions as we come to the conclusion of the KICK series; the renewal stage. Less
Beat Tape 2 follows a string of well-received rele... Moreases since it's predecessor Beat Tape 1, including his Out To Sea E.P with Carmody, a white label release on hip-hop label Soulection, collaborations with the likes of Bearcubs and reworks of Mos Def and Busta Rhymes. On Beat Tape 2, Tom has evolved his sound from it's origins in Boom Bap hip-hop stylings of producers like J Dilla to encompass his diverse range of influences. Tom's music finds the sweet spot between electronica, hip-hop and acoustic, predominantly linked by a single quality: soul. "It's about the feeling you get from the music that makes it soulful, and for me that comes down to the chords. If it's a nice, soulful chord progression that's what makes it soulful and gives you that warm feeling. A lot of Gospel music, J Dilla, Erykah Badu and Jazz - I find that very soulful. That's what I listen to, so I guess that comes out in my music." Less

This pristine recording, newly mixed by Hendrix's longtime engineer Eddie Kramer, captures the original Jimi Hendrix Experience in their unrivaled, peak form. A portion of this performance was previously included as part of a short-lived Westwood One radio documentary box set [Lifelines 1990-1992] but has been unavailable in any form for two decades and this marks the first time ever that it will be available on vinyl. On June 25th, 1961, Bill Evans and his trio made j... Moreazz history over the course of five sets at the Village Vanguard. Selections from those performances were released on two full-length LPs, WALTZ FOR DEBBY and Sunday AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD, both of which went on to become landmark jazz albums from the era. The three-disc COMPLETE VILLAGE VANGUARD RECORDINGS provides a valuable service by presenting all five sets in their complete and original sequence, with crisp remastered sound, a previously unissued take (Scott LaFaro's "Gloria's Step"), and snippets of on-stage patter. Much has been made of the chemistry between Evans, bassist LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian, and little of it has been overblown. The three make intuitive, shape-shifting music that breaks new ground with its subtle, sophisticated rhythmic interplay and achingly lyrical beauty. Evans's playing, informed by a Chopin-esque delicacy as much as by post-bop dynamism, is a case study of the jazz ideal achieved. The music, the improved sound, and the chance to have the complete date under one cover make this set a must. Less
