In James McMurtry’s new effort, The Horses and t... Morehe Hounds, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). This first collection in seven years spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation (closer “Blackberry Winter”). Familiar foundations guide the journey. “There’s a definite Los Angeles vibe to this record,” McMurtry says. “The ghost of Warren Zevon seems to be stomping around among the guitar tracks. Don’t know how he got in there. He never signed on for work for hire.” The Horses and the Hounds is a reunion of sorts. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (Ozzy Osbourne, John Fogerty, Van Halen, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica, California. Hogarth recorded McMurtry’s first two albums, Too Long in the Wasteland and Candyland and later mixed McMurtry’s first self-produced album, Saint Mary of the Woods. Another veteran of those three releases, guitarist David Grissom (Joe Ely, John Mellencamp, Dixie Chicks), returns with some of his finest work. Less
Chrome Dreams is another of Neil Young’s legenda... Morery “lost” albums; finished albums that for various reasons Neil decided not to release at the time. The recent releases of Homegrown and Toast also fall into this category. Chrome Dreams features 12 songs recorded between 1974 and 1977. If the album was released in 1977 as originally planned, it would certainly be considered as one of the masterpieces in Neil’s long career.
The album contains some of Neil’s most iconic songs: “Pocahontas”, “Like A Hurricane”, “Powderfinger”, Homegrown”, “Too Far Gone” and “Star of Bethlehem”. Most of the tracks were subsequently released on later Neil Young albums (e.g.: American Stars ‘N’ Bars, Hawks & Doves, Hitchiker, Archives Vol II), although Chrome Dreams includes unreleased versions of two much loved songs: “Sedan Delivery” and “Hold Back The Tears”. Four of the songs are making their vinyl debut. Less

Moreelease, Matador Records is reissuing Spoon’s beloved eighth album, ‘They Want My Soul,’ on all digital platforms, with a 2xLP gatefold vinyl release to follow in the fall. Along with the album’s original 10 tracks—including all-time Spoon classics “Inside Out,” “Do You,” and “Rent I Pay”— ‘They Want My Soul: Deluxe More Soul Edition’ includes 11 demos and alternate versions, almost all of them previously unreleased. The reissue underlines the album’s vaunted place amid one of rock’s most bulletproof catalogs and offers a glimpse at the creative process behind a pivotal moment in the ongoing Spoon story. It’s one thing for a band to last a long time. But it’s something completely different—and inordinately more difficult—for a band to make very good records for a long time. Spoon is one of those bands. How do they do it? By maintaining dignity in a world hellbent on sucking it out of each and every one of us. By being unafraid to introduce new voices and creative expressions in their work, while never taking a corny left turn just for the sake of it. By knowing when they need to stop and recharge—and when to come back with force. They make it all look easy. But ‘They Want My Soul: Deluxe More Soul Edition’ shows the hard work it takes to achieve greatness every damn time. Less

Limited vinyl LP pressing. Following on the mellow... More buzz generated on their 2015 debut album, Timeline, The Mild High Club returns with their second full-length, Skiptracing. In just over a calendar year, it's been quite the journey for Alexander Brettin, who is both founder and member of the Club. Brettin admits that for the first Mild High Club album he resorted to vague lyrics so as to highlight the music itself. But for Skiptracing there's both a heightened thematic aspect as well as more complex musical arrangements encasing it. In Brettin's estimation, the album's story arc is that of a "private investigator attempting to trace the steps of the sound and the spirit of American music." And in investigating the spirit of American music, The Mild High Club re-imagine AM radio hits as blasting in from a parallel universe, the sound of early ‘70s LA in a smog of sativa. If Todd Rundgren was the primary touchstone for Timeline, Brettin and band now look to the wry, trenchant wit of Steely Dan, gazing deep into the dark underbelly of sun-bright LA and coming away with a catchy song underpinned by slippery jazz phrasings. It's a cosmic connection that tethers The Mild High Club to fellow sonic brethren like Ariel Pink, Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Connan Mockasin and more. Less

To emerge from a global pandemic with a renewed se... Morense of situational awareness, hard won insight, and a new album is the kind of move we've come to expect from Thrice over the last twenty years. With Horizons/East, Dustin Kensrue and his bandmates address, with candor and courage, the fragile and awkward arrangements that pass for civilization, while inviting us to dwell more knowingly within our own lives. Without surrendering any of the energy and hard edge of their previous albums, they've given us a profoundly meditative work which serves as a musical summons to everyday attentiveness.Since forming Thrice with guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge in 1998, Kensrue has never been one to back down from a mental fight. This mood is set by the opening synth-driven number "Color of the Sky," which sounds well-suited to accompany the closing credits of the Stranger Things season finale. Think Flying Lotus giving way to Elbow and setting the listener down in a new dimension. A self-recorded effort, Horizons/East conveys a palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility. Less
Buffalo Tom (Bill Janovitz, Chris Colbourn and Tom... Released in 1990, songs from Birdbrain have become live favorites including the epic title track and “Enemy”. In 1992 the band recorded their third album Let Me Come Over with a varied group of songs they had been developing at home and on the road - mixing their live power trio sound with some more acoustic based guitar ballads. The album’s single “Taillights Fade” became their signature song. Released in 1993, Big Red Letter Day found the band doing what they do very well indeed, but with more body and gloss to the production. The pandemic records were particularly notable and unique that the band members recorded most of their instruments individually in separate cities. Welshpool Frillies finds the gang back together, in a Brooklyn basement with producer Travis Harrison. Much of it was recorded live to tape. The catchy ear worms in these new songs are undeniable, as the kinetic energy of the band is captured in it's most raw and pure form. The album is brash, no-frills, and punky, inspired by the wiliness of 90s-era GBV, specifically the Scalping The Guru compilation that Pollard put together in 2022. 2023 marks the 40th anniversary of GBV's start in Dayton, Ohio.
