Coming January 17, 2025: A 2xLP / 2xCD repress of ... More‘Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo.’ Back in print for the first time in over 20 years, the compilation assembles more than two hours of hard to find and unreleased Yo La Tengo music from 1988 – 1995. Some reflections on the material, excerpted from Ira Kaplan’s original ‘Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo’ liner notes: ”FOG OVER FRISCO” - Oct ‘89 Georgia and I started playing this in 1989 on our acoustic duo tour (oh, how the Timbuk 3 crowd in KC loved us). Gene Holder played bass and produced the rock version at Water Music, which was then shelved until we completed it in 1991 for That Is Yo La Tengo. ”TOO LATE” - Dec ‘94 This Wire song was recorded by Roger Moutenot live at Alex the Great during Electro-pura. Mixed May 1995 by Peter Walsh at Tin Pan Alley. Listen for James’s scream. “HANKY PANKY NOHOW” - Sep ‘89 Tara helped us with this one, I no longer remember how. Originally on the 1991 Spanish comp The Ruta 66 Album. “SURFIN’ WITH THE SHAH” - Feb ‘93 This Urinals cover is the first song we ever played live. This version recorded on the Dump Mobile Unit in the south of France where Matador sent us to write songs for a proposed musical based on the popular television program Small Wonder. “ BLITZKREIG BOP” - Feb ‘93 We gave this to a Japanese fanzine, but I have no memory which one. Chrome Dreams is another of Neil Young’s legenda... Morery “lost” albums; finished albums that for various reasons Neil decided not to release at the time. The recent releases of Homegrown and Toast also fall into this category. Chrome Dreams features 12 songs recorded between 1974 and 1977. If the album was released in 1977 as originally planned, it would certainly be considered as one of the masterpieces in Neil’s long career.
The album contains some of Neil’s most iconic songs: “Pocahontas”, “Like A Hurricane”, “Powderfinger”, Homegrown”, “Too Far Gone” and “Star of Bethlehem”. Most of the tracks were subsequently released on later Neil Young albums (e.g.: American Stars ‘N’ Bars, Hawks & Doves, Hitchiker, Archives Vol II), although Chrome Dreams includes unreleased versions of two much loved songs: “Sedan Delivery” and “Hold Back The Tears”. Four of the songs are making their vinyl debut. Less

Named after the New York street where their studio... More is situated--and where a plane engine landed on September 11, 2001--Murray Street is potent, accessible, daring, and often obliteratingly lovely. For a start, the first three songs ("The Empty Page," "Disconnection Notice," and "Rain On Tin") easily rank with the highlights of SY's previous 15 albums. Obliquely melancholic, tuneful but unorthodox, all are enriched by great cascades of intricate three-guitar noise. Less
"The first three are innocent in a way, becau... Morese we didn't have an audience when we were making them," Oberst says. "But from Lifted on, I was definitely aware of an audience. Lifted was well-received right away, and then everything happened with Wide Awake and Digital Ash." Those two albums came out simultaneously. And their lead singles - "Take It Easy (Love Nothing)," from the austere, remote Digital Ash, and "Lua," from the warm, folky Wide Awake - debuted in the top two slots on the Billboard Hot 100. "First Day of My Life," also from Wide Awake, would later be voted the Number One love song of all time by NPR Music's reader's poll. Bright Eyes had officially broken through. It was a heady, exciting time, but also fraughtand tense, both because of the band's careening new fame, and because of the state of the world. When Bright Eyes made their Tonight Show debut in 2006, they chose to perform none of their shiny new hits, instead delivering a searing, harrowing rendition of their caustic anti-Bush anthem, "When The President Talks To God." These days, Oberst is still amusing himself by messing with the extremes Bright Eyes baked into this era's releases, extremes that reflected the polar, with-us-or-against-us, fractious feel of the times. The reworked Digital Ash tracks, originally so clean and elegant, are, on the companion EP, full of "harmonica and mandolins - folky vibes," Oberst says. While the analogue sweetness of the Wide Awake songs have been put through a detached nihilism filter. Less

Limited vinyl LP pressing. Following on the mellow... More buzz generated on their 2015 debut album, Timeline, The Mild High Club returns with their second full-length, Skiptracing. In just over a calendar year, it's been quite the journey for Alexander Brettin, who is both founder and member of the Club. Brettin admits that for the first Mild High Club album he resorted to vague lyrics so as to highlight the music itself. But for Skiptracing there's both a heightened thematic aspect as well as more complex musical arrangements encasing it. In Brettin's estimation, the album's story arc is that of a "private investigator attempting to trace the steps of the sound and the spirit of American music." And in investigating the spirit of American music, The Mild High Club re-imagine AM radio hits as blasting in from a parallel universe, the sound of early ‘70s LA in a smog of sativa. If Todd Rundgren was the primary touchstone for Timeline, Brettin and band now look to the wry, trenchant wit of Steely Dan, gazing deep into the dark underbelly of sun-bright LA and coming away with a catchy song underpinned by slippery jazz phrasings. It's a cosmic connection that tethers The Mild High Club to fellow sonic brethren like Ariel Pink, Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Connan Mockasin and more. Less
